About The Throne
Jökulsárlón Glacier, Iceland.
Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon, bordering Vatnajökull National Park in south-eastern Iceland. The lagoon’s water is still, bright blue, and dotted with icebergs from the surrounding Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. The glacial Lagoon flows through a short waterway into the Atlantic Ocean. Through this waterway, large chunks of ice from the glacial lagoon, end up in the ocean. And after a few hours at sea, they wash ashore again on this black sand beach. It is a surreal view.
This particular block of ice was massive. It was dangerous getting up close to it. It could easily tip over and crush you. Countless accidents have happened here. It resembled a throne of ice, so pure and ancient. The ice that washes ashore here is over 100,000 years old. It’s a humbling experience, being in the presence of these sculptures.
