The west coast of New Zealand’s South Island.

It is now late afternoon and I’m getting itchy fingers again. Where shall we go tonight for sunset shooting? Unfortunately, today I haven’t pinpointed a specific spot. I note Okarito Beach on my map. Not a major attraction around here. However, let’s check it out. As often the drive and following hike takes longer then planned. It’s another race against the sun.

I manage to reach this isolated corner at Okarito Beach about 10 minutes before the sun will set. Just in time.

Ancient boulders surfacing just above sea level. A beach filled with black and white pebbles. A setting sun. Can it get any better?

Yes it can! Unannounced, the sea of clouds above me turn red. The scene in front of me transforms into a mystical land before time. I feel like if I’m witnessing the creation of earth itself.

This is what my passion for photography is all about. These unique moments when nature takes off her mask and shows her real beauty. Totally unpredictable. It can happen anytime and anywhere.
