About Illuminated Rocks
Snaefellsnes peninsula, Iceland.
During my trip to Iceland I spend weeks driving around this impressive island. Landscape photography doesn’t get much more exciting than it does here. It is such a diverse place, with landscapes that are simply unbelievable.
The last few days of my visit I spent on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. I visited a beach called Djúpalónssandur beach in Snaefellsjoekull National Park. Luckily my map was pretty accurate and I didn’t need to ask for any directions. I simply wouldn’t be able to pronounce many of the placenames in Iceland.
This was a volcanic beach, with countless polished pebbles scattered all over it. The never-ending crashing waves had a polishing effects on these pebbles. It was a rather cloudy day, but for a brief moment sunlight burst through the cloud cover and lit up the scene. All those pebbles took on a magic glow. As if they were illuminated.
I tried different compositions and took quite a number of images with different depths-of-field. When reviewing my images, I immediately noticed this was a winner. It simply stood out. It’s one of those rare hidden treasures you find when reviewing countless photos, taking during a multi-week trip.
