About Craigs Hut
Victoria, Australia.
There are countless historic huts scattered around the Victorian Alps in Australia. Most of them are in incredible locations, they have a very basic construction with a rustic feel that simply blends into the landscape. I visited and photographed many huts over the past years. Some are really difficult to reach.
Craigs Hut is located near Mount Buller, perched on a hill, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It was originally built as a set for the “The Man from Snowy River” film, but soon the hut became an iconic symbol of Australia’s settler history. Despite its fame, it is very hard to reach and very few people visit it. You need a sturdy four wheel drive and a good map, as the area is a maze of small tracks in a large forested area.
On this specific evening, I camped out near Craig’s Hut, as it is a good 5 hour drive from Melbourne. It was a gorgeous night. Thinking back at that sense of freedom, overlooking this magnificent landscape, I very much long to make it back there soon. It’s one of those inspiring places that takes you back into time, when Australian settlement was in its infancy.
