About Realm of Ice
Vatnajökull Glacier, Iceland.
Vatnajökull is the largest and most voluminous ice cap in Iceland. It covers about 8% of the entire country. The average thickness of the ice is 350 meters (1.100ft) with a maximum thickness of 950 meters (3.000ft). Under this icecap there are several volcanoes, some which have erupted only recently.
I wanted to capture the magnitude of this glacier. As well as how harsh and unforgiving it can be. It is an inhospitable land. A grand Kingdom of Ice, inaccessible to unwanted or unprepared visitors.
As a landscape photographer you always aim to capture that next impressive view. And although I have seen some striking places before, when I reached this viewpoint, my jaws simply dropped. It took me a few minutes to come to terms with what I was seeing in front of me. I hope I managed to capture the sheer size of this glacier, and provide you a window into this Realm of Ice.
