About Wakan Tanka
Yosemite National Park, California.
I travelled to
An impressive cloudscape started to form in the far distance. It didn’t look like it would last long, so within minutes I found myself wading through waste deep snow, making my way to a nearby river. The river and reflections of surrounding trees made a great composition. The cloudscape on top of the mountains in the background was like a gift from heaven. The elements of nature blended into one beautiful image. It’s the kind of image an artist would paint on a canvas in the comfort of his home. Only, this was a true spectacle by Mother Nature, right in front of me. Within 30 minutes the clouds had dispersed and the image – although still pretty – had lost its magical touch. But I nailed the shot.
In Native American Sioux way of life, ‘Wakan Tanka’ is the term for ‘the sacred’ or ‘the divine’. This is usually translated as ‘The Great Spirit’. The impressive cloudscape over the distant mountains still today reminds me of ‘The Great Spirit’ I saw that day.
