Jökulsárlón Glacier, Iceland.

Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon, bordering Vatnajökull National Park in south-eastern Iceland. The lagoon’s water is still, bright blue, and dotted with icebergs from the surrounding Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. The glacial Lagoon flows through a short waterway into the Atlantic Ocean. Through this waterway, large chunks of ice from the glacial lagoon, end up in the ocean. And after a few hours at sea, they wash ashore again on this black sand beach. It is a surreal view.

Some of these blocks of ice are simply massive. Some have amazing formations with countless possibilities for a strong image. It is tempting to get up close to them. But you need to be extremely cautious photographing them from up close. Many have just recently washed ashore. And the constant crashing waves, make them very unsteady. They can easily tip over. They can crush you, seriously injure you, or possibly even kill you.

I vividly remember walking on this beach. It was 2.30am. And in Iceland the sun had just risen. Not a soul around. Just myself, gentle waves and a black sandy beach full of surreal massive blocks of ice.
