About Green Compass
Kangaroo Island, South Australia.
Xanthorrhoea is a native Australian plant. I photographed this one on Kangaroo Island in South Australia.
Xanthorrhoea is a very important plant to Indigenous Australians. Its flowering spike makes a perfect fishing spear. Nectar from the flowers creates a sweet tasting drink. On top of that it is used as a natural compass, because flowers on the warmer, sunnier side of the spike open first, pointing north.
I decided to take several abstract images of this magnificent plant, and this one definitely topped my favourites-list. I decided to release it in a very low edition of 20 prints only!
